Did you know: Mice and rats dislike the smell of peppermint so sprinkled on runs can act as a useful deterrent. Oil Appearance: Clear. Chakra: Throat & Sacral. Chinese Element: Earth & Wood. Acknowledged as the best quality Peppermint available, English Peppermint is at the luxury end of the market. The normal American mentha piperita tends to go into products such as toothpaste and confectionery. English peppermint (also known as Mitcham Peppermint) is used for after-dinner mints and mint liqueurs. It is a much smoother, fuller and more rounded oil than the standard product. It has an unusually high content of methylesters (giving excellent body and sweetness) and a modest content of the bitter tasting ketone, Menthone. It is often used in after-dinner mints and is popular after a bout of over-indulgence. Blend 1 drop of Peppermint with 5ml of Sweet Almond oil for a comforting tummy rub (massage in a clockwise direction). Try adding 4 drops to a bowl of warm water for a wonderfully refreshing footbath. Also a good insect repellent, use in a burner or diffuser, or add 10 drops to a plant spray filled with water -shake well and spray the room & bedding, etc. (Avoid polished wood - may cause bleaching of fabric).

Country of Origin: Russia. Plant Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae) Method of Extraction: The oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves. Main Theraputic Properties: Analgesic, Antispasmodic, Calmative, Neurotonic, Uterine tonic. Contraindications: Non toxic and non irritant in prescribed doses. Did you know: 'Salvia' comes from the Latin word Salvere which means to 'heal' or to 'save'. Oil Appearance: Colourless - pale yellow or green. Chakra: Base & Sacral (Heart). Chinese Element: Metal Clary Sage is a herb which grows up to 120cm in height. It has white flowers which vary in colour from pale blue or lavender pink. Clary sage was often referred to as 'Muscatel' sage in Germany, as it was thought to share the taste of Muscatel wine. The pungent, herbaceous aroma of Clary Sage has a strongly uplifting yet soothing effect on the mind. In times of worry, try soaking in a warm bath containing 2 drops of Clary Sage, 2 drops of Geranium and 3 drops of Lavender, all diluted in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil. An excellent relaxing massage oil can be made by blending 1 drop of Clary Sage, 1 drop of Roman Chamomile and 2 drops of Sandalwood in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil.
Myrrh is distilled from a resin which has been used since antiquity. It has a sweet, smoky, slightly musky aroma. This oil is soothing, clarifying and grounding. It is a great oil to ease a worried mind and is also used in India as a remedy for infections of the gums and teeth.
Country of Origin: Somalia. Plant Family: Burseraceae. Method of Extraction: The oil is distilled from the resin of the Myrrh tree. Main Theraputic Properties: Antibacterial, Anticatarrahal, Anti-inflammatory, Antispasmodic, Astringent, Calmative. Contraindications: Non toxic and non irritant in prescribed doses. Did you know: It is said no soldier of Ancient Greece went into battle without a paste of myrrh, ready for use on injuries Oil Appearance: Pale to Dark Amber. Chakra: Neri Chinese Element: Earth (& Metal). There are around 80 species of Commiphora, the resin is collected from these thorny shrubs which are up to 3 meters in height. Myrrh has acquired a reputation as a healer over the centuries and as such can be beneficial when used in inhalations to help ease winter ills. Place 1 drop each of Myrrh, Benzoin and Lavender in a bowl of boiling water. Drape a towel across your head and shoulders and inhale the vapours for a few minutes. Try blending 1 drop of Myrrh, 2 drops of Geranium and 1 drop of Peppermint in 10ml of Coconut oil to use as a massage oil on neglected feet. Myrrh is extremely viscous, and therefore more difficult to use. We use a larger dropper for this oil, but with time it may solidify. The only solution is to warm the oil gently in the hands before use, and to be patient!
Vetiver is a heavy, viscous oil with a rich undertone of "precious wood notes" and is very useful to calm and balance the mind and body. It is also good for dry skin conditions and aching joints and muscles.
Country of Origin: Indonesia (Java) Plant Family: Poaceae (Gramineae). Method of Extraction: The oil is steam distilled from the dried roots. Main Theraputic Properties: Calmative, Digestive stimulant, Antispasmodic, Immune tonic, Antirheumatic. Contraindications: Non toxic and non irritant in prescribed doses. Oil Appearance: Dark Brown to Amber. Chakra: Base. Chinese Element: Earth. Vetiver grows in many parts of India, Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia. The rootlets are dried, cut and chopped, then soaked in water prior to distillation. The most important producers being Haiti and Java.

This Vetiver is Indonesian. It has a smoky note which is linked to the tradition of Javan producers burning off the grass before digging up the roots. Haitian producers cut the grass and use it for feeding cattle or for grass mats, so the oil has a different aroma, though the oil has been scarce for some time.

As Vetiver is extremely viscous, a large nozzle in the bottle will help to some extent, but it may require gentle warming of the bottle in your hands or warm water to pour a few drops out. Blend 1 drop each of Vetiver, Jasmine and Sandalwood in 10ml of Peach Kernel oil for a luxurious massage oil. To help shrug off aches and pains on cold winter nights blend a teaspoon of Sweet Almond oil, add 1 drop each of Vetiver, Patchouli and Lavender and swish into a very warm bath.
Ravintsara has a clear, sharp, fresh aroma. It has cleansing, anti-septic and strongly anti-viral properties and is particularly good for respiratory problems. It is also a great oil for general winter ills. Plant Family: Lauraceae. Country of Origin: Madagascar Method of Extraction: The oil is steam distilled from the leaves of the tree. Main Theraputic Properties: Antibacterial, Anticatarrhal, Antifungal, Antiviral, Immune tonic, Decongestant. Contraindications: Non toxic and non irritant in prescribed doses. Oil Apperance: Pale to Colourless. Chakra: Heart . Chinese Element: Metal & Fire. This oil is often used to stem cold and flu like symptoms thanks to its antibacterial and antiviral properties. It is a very versatile oil, and like Lavender, works well blended with other oils and is a very safe oil making it suitable for children. Use as an inhalent to encourage easy breathing for all the family. Ravintsara is a tall forest tree native to Madagascar with some cultivation on the islands of Reunion and Mauritius. All parts of the tree are aromatic and have been used by local people both in antiquity and current times.
