Oil of May Chang is a comparatively new essential oil to the West. It is steam-distilled from the pepper-shaped fruits (Cubeba) of this tropical tree.
The strong lemon odour of the main constituent (Citral - 75%) dominates and hence the oil resembles Lemongrass, although it has a rounder and more fruity aroma. While the synonym Litsea Citrata is often given for May Chang, Litsea Citrata is a related species with a lower Citral content.
Use 5 or 6 drops in an oil burner to ward of insects.

Acknowledged as the best quality Peppermint available, English Peppermint is at the luxury end of the market. The normal American mentha piperita tends to go into products such as toothpaste and confectionery. English peppermint (also known as Mitcham Peppermint) is used for after-dinner mints and mint liqueurs.

Vetiver grows in many parts of India, Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia. The rootlets are dried, cut and chopped, then soaked in water prior to distillation. The most important producers being Haiti and Java. This Vetiver is Indonesian. It has a smoky note which is linked to the tradition of Javan producers burning off the grass before digging up the roots. Haitian producers cut the grass and use it for feeding cattle or for grass mats, so the oil has a different aroma, though the oil has been scarce for some time. As Vetiver is extremely viscous, a large nozzle in the bottle will help to some extent, but it may require gentle warming of the bottle in your hands or warm water to pour a few drops out.

For a light, aftershave facial oil, blend 15ml of Jojoba oil with 2 drops of Cypress, 2 drops of Sandalwood and 1 drop of Bergamot. Apply sparingly.

Eucalyptus Globulus is extremely useful during the winter months. It can be very effective in a steam inhalation.
Try adding 2 drops Eucalyptus, 1 drop Roman Chamomile and 1 drop Lavender to a bowl of just-boiled water. Lean over the bowl (not too close) with a towel covering your head and inhale the vapours for a few minutes. Alternatively, blend the same oils in two teaspoons of Sweet Almond oil and massage into the chest and back.
Blended with Citronella or Cedarwood in an oil burner, Eucalyptus can help maintain an insect-free BBQ! Alternatively, try the lemon-scented Eucalyptus Citriodora as a very powerful natural insect-repellent. |
